Art direction, design, and photography for EF’s 2018 Global Leadership Summit in Berlin, which brought students and educators from around the world together for a three-day conference on The Influence of Technology on Society. Attendees participated in hands-on workshops, heard from keynote speakers like Randi Zuckerberg and Glen Keane, and competed in teams to invent and prototype technological innovations to improve daily life. We wanted the branding for the event to embody this same spirit of innovation, curiosity, and play, while also reinforcing the cause-and-effect nature of invention. We kicked it off with the mother of all technology and a powerful symbol of progress: the wheel. From there, we constructed a series of Rube Goldberg Machines out of everyday objects (including wheels in their many forms) to playfully symbolize the various aspects of daily life that technology impacts, from culture to communication to the environment. Our message to attendees was simple: you don’t need to reinvent the wheel to have a positive impact on the world, but you do need to understand the past in order to innovate for the future.
